Curriculum Highlights:
Below is a short summary of topics covered in each course. Concepts and skills developed in one grade will be used to build understanding of more advanced concepts in the next grade.
Each lesson includes review of the material covered previously along with introduction of new material, speed exercises (math drills), math games and word problems.
Home work is an integral part of each lesson, it must be completed and it will be graded.
Review tests will be given on every topic throughout the year along with the cumulative tests at the end of each semester.
Kindergarten
Children are introduced to whole numbers, shapes and number / object patterns. Students learn the basics of addition and subtraction of numbers up to 10; counting on and backwards as well as comparing, sorting and putting numbers in order. Activity-based program helps children encounter math in a meaningful way through various classroom activities.
1st Grade
Students learn whole numbers and basic number operations. The course will introduce money and measurements as well as shapes and patterns. Students will practice solving 1 and 2 step word problems. Emphasis is on building a strong foundation in basic computational skills as well as mental calculations.
2nd Grade
Students will keep developing their computational skills. Multiplication tables are introduced. Measurements are covered in greater depth. Children will be using mental calculations and solving word problems. Early introduction to algebra .
3rd Grade
Children continue to master their multiplication tables and improve their computational skills of larger numbers. Continuing emphasis on 2 and 3 step word problems. Money (as introduction to decimals), different measurements, geometry, fractions and other topics are covered in greater depth.
4th Grade
Students keep building their skills in The Four Operations of Whole Numbers and The Four Operations of Decimals. Children will continue learning algebra, geometry as well as data analysis, probability, fractions, graphs and a range of other topics.
5th Grade
Children continue development of their computing skills with fractions and decimals. Geometry is covered in greater depth. Students learn to convert different measures and analyze data using different types of graphs. Children will learn solving algebraic expressions. Percentages, ratios, angles are some of the other topics covered by the course.
6th Grade
Students will continue to learn ratios / percentages in greater depth. Strong emphasis is placed on learning algebraic expressions. Radius, diameter, circumference and area of a circle are some of the topics covered in geometry. Solving word problems involving speed and data analysis.
7th Grade
Students will continue learning equations, rate, ratio and percentage on a more advanced level. Angles, 2-D and 3-D figures, area, perimeter and symmetry are covered by the course. Emphasis is on solving word problems in both algebra and geometry.
8th Grade
Course covers different types of equations, statistics, algebraic manipulation, geometry, trigonometry, indicies, graphs, inequalities and a range of other topics. A lot of attention is given to solving word problems.
